KAUKAUNA, WI – (WISS & WGBW) – A standing-room-only crowd of hundreds turned out to Plumbers & Steamfitters UA Local 400 in Kaukauna to hear Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Thursday night.
Sanders appeared just a few hours before the CNN Presidential Debate between President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump. He was quick to say that he was not there on Biden’s dime. His campaign is paying for his Wisconsin appearances.
Working-class not ruling-class
Sanders’ appearances in Wisconsin, and other states, are his attempt to motivate working-class voters to elect more progressive candidates who will work to promote policy that will benefit the average person and not just the “ruling class.”
“If you are a working-class person, if you are a trade unionist, I think the choice is quite clear,” said Sanders. “You either vote for the strongest pro-union president in the history of this country (Joe Biden) or an anti-union president (Donald Trump).”

Sanders listed issues he feels are the most important this election: which president has done and will do the most for the working class, climate change, and women’s reproductive rights.
“I happen to believe that it should be women who control their own bodies, not the government!” Sanders said.
Sanders called out what he considers the right’s most hypocritical stance. He said Republicans call for freedom, smaller government, and less governmental interference in lives and business. Yet, at the same time, they attempt to legislate women’s reproductive freedoms.

The rally in Kaukauna came just hours before the first debate between the two presumptive candidates.
“The media will make a big deal about it. Someone will say something really cute, or clever, or dumb, whatever it may be. Whatever happens tonight, that’s entertainment. We’re not voting for the best actor of the year, the best movie of the year. Stay focused on the issues,” said Sanders. “And I think if you do, and the American people do, Biden will win this election.”
A recording of the rally is available to watch on Sander’s website and on YouTube.
