EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLCX) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is being selected as the running mate for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
Vice President Harris, who had narrowed down a field of about a half-dozen potential candidates for the spot, picked the second-term governor, according to the Harris campaign.
“I am proud to announce that I’ve asked Governor Tim Walz to be my running mate,” Harris said in a campaign release. “One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep. It’s personal. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his own.
“We are going to build a great partnership. We start out as underdogs but I believe together, we can win this election.”
Walz, who served in the military and worked as a teacher before getting into politics, represented Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District for 12 years before running for governor. The Democrat was first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022.
The 1st District covers southern Minnesota, including cities along the Mississippi River across from Wisconsin.
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin said in a statement that Walz “is a proven Midwestern leader” and that Wisconsin residents are familiar with Walz.
“He’s our neighbor, and embodies the spirit of neighborliness,” the party said in a release. “In Western Wisconsin, voters see him every day on local television beamed in from the Twin Cities.”
Walz, a native of Nebraska, will campaign with Harris in Philadelphia Tuesday before coming back to the Midwest on Wednesday with stops in Michigan and Eau Claire, Wis.
Harris secured the Democratic nomination for president on Monday.
Harris and Walz will appear at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from Aug. 19-22.
