MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Researchers are getting fewer reports of coyotes spotted on Madison’s west side.
For the last two weeks or so, coyotes have been seen during the day more on the west side of the city. Volunteers from the UW Canid Project were focused on two coyotes: one that seemed to have a lame leg that was healing, and another that seemed sick.
They set live traps for the sick coyote, who had last been seen near Odana Hills Golf Course. They wanted to take it to the wildlife center for treatment. So far, they still haven’t caught that coyote. They’re also getting fewer reports from people who have seen it.
Meanwhile, another coyote was spotted on the playground of Franklin Elementary School on Friday. One had been seen in the Vilas Park and Nakoma neighborhood for weeks, but this is on the other side of the UW Arboretum. All students were inside, and by the time school staff called police, the coyote had walked off on its own.
If you see a healthy coyote, you’re encouraged to haze it: wave your arms and yell. The goal is for the coyote to run off.
