OUTAGAMIE COUNTY- (WGBW) – Law enforcement agencies across Northeast Wisconsin are asking residents to be alert and aware of a scam targeting elderly victims in the area.

The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office says elderly victims are being targeted by scammers who ask them to post bond for loved ones in jail. Officials say the scammers contact their victims by phone, saying a loved one is in jail or has been in an accident and needs immediate financial help.

“The scammers are asking victims to withdraw large sums of cash ($5,000-$45,000) and asking to standby as a “courier / bondsman” would be arriving shortly to take custody of their “bond,” a press release explained. “

Outagamie County, Brown County Sheriff’s, De Pere Police, Ashwaubenon Public Safety, and the Fox Valley Metro Police Department are working together to identify and arrest those responsible.

Law Enforcement strongly encourages citizens never to entertain these scam artists or provide any financial assistance.
