A 13-year-old Fond du Lac boy was taken to an area trauma center after he ran into the side of delivery van with his bicycle just before 4:30 Friday afternoon.

Fond du Lac Police and Fire and Rescue responded to the accident at the intersection of East Pioneer Road and Martin Avenue.

Police say the boy was riding his bicycle west on a sidewalk. Witnesses reported the traffic light for north and southbound vehicles turned green and a delivery driver began to enter the intersection when the boy’s bike struck the front passenger side of the van.

The boy suffered a significant injury to his left leg. He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital and a ThedaStar helicopter flew him to a trauma center.

Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says it’s a powerful reminder to parents to review bicycle safety rules with their kids such as wearing a helmet, walking bikes across busy streets, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing.
