Saratoga, WI (WFHR, WIRI)
During September of 1898, a direct property tax of $195 was levied on Saratoga Property owners for construction of a new town hall. This investment in a modest building, located at 9420 State Hwy 13 S. served the town and it’s residents until the early 1960’s, the site and building later finding various uses ending with an Antique Shop in the early 2000’s
Thanks to a $35,000 grant from the Town of Saratoga, the building is being preserved as part of Saratoga history at Historic Point Basse.
The site today, only the stone foundation and outhouse remain
According to Chris Nepper, lead mover, the original roof has been removed and will be replaced with new trusses, decking and shingles due to age and deterioration. The aging subfloor and supports have also been replaced. The 4 outside walls and original tongue and groove flooring have been carefully disassembled and transported via flatbed truck to the new site at Point Basse, where they will be re-erected on a new poured foundation. Windows will be refurbished over the winter for reinstallation in spring. Original sandstone foundation stones have been saved and preserved for future use.
Final reconstruction and interior work will then be completed with possible funding from a State of Wisconsin grant, and individual donations.
